Sadler encouraged by how Candy Boy is working

Barbara D. Livingston Since finishing third in last month's Pennsylvania Derby, Candy Boy has turned in two good workouts towards the Breeders' Cup Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Candy Boy and Sweet Swap, two of trainer John Sadler’s hopes for Breeders’ Cup races on Nov. 1, worked at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Candy Boy, a candidate for the BC Classic, worked five furlongs in 1:00.80. Sadler timed the 3-year-old Candy Boy galloping out six furlongs in 1:13.40. Candy Boy has had two workouts since finishing third in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing on Sept. 20. Candy Boy worked a half-mile in 47.80 seconds on Oct. 4.

“He looked good last week and this week,” Sadler said.

Candy Boy will be pre-entered for the BC Dirt Mile, but Sadler said the primary goal is the BC Classic. Candy Boy has won 2 of 11 starts and $786,800. He is winless in five starts since winning the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes here in February, including a third in the Santa Anita Derby and a second in the West Virginia Derby.

Sweet Swap, unraced since winning the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes on the hillside turf course in April, worked five furlongs in 1:01. A candidate for the BC Turf Sprint, Sweet Swap has had a steady string of workouts since mid-September.

The New York stakes winners Moreno and Private Zone also worked for starts in Breeders’ Cup races.

Moreno, who won the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga in August, worked a half-mile in 50 seconds. Moreno was disqualified from fourth and placed ninth in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 27 for causing interference. Moreno is being pointed to the BC Classic.

Private Zone, the winner of the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park on Sept. 27, worked a half-mile in 47.80 seconds. He is a leading candidate for the BC Sprint.
