Rutherienne gets win on DQ

Mike Farrell|Jun 30, 2007

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Rutherienne won the Grade 3, $150,000 Boiling Springs Stakes on a disqualification Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Red Birkin was first under the wire in the race for 3-year-old fillies on the turf. Red Birkin, however, drifted out in the lane, squeezing the pacesetting Sharp Susan while carrying out the rallying Rutherienne.

Both Joe Bravo aboard Rutherienne and Eddie Castro on Sharp Susan claimed foul. After a review, the stewards disqualified Red Birkin and jockey Jose Lezcano from first to third. Rutherienne got the victory and Sharp Susan moved up to second from third.

"It was frustrating down the lane," Bravo said. "I was sitting on the best horse. I had all the running room. Next thing I know, Lezcano is pushing Eddie out to me. If I don't make room for Castro, he's in trouble. Lezcano is a great rider, a good guy. I hate to say it, but in the heat of the battle, he messed up."

Lezcano was tight-lipped. "I have nothing to say," he said.

With the victory, Rutherienne ($3.60) improved her record to 5 for 6 for trainer Christophe Clement with Grade 3 victories in her last two outings. In her prior race, Rutherienne dead-heated for the victory in the Sands Point Stakes at Belmont Park.

The time was 1:40.60 for the 1 1/16 miles on the firm course.

Dinner Break was fourth followed by Full of Ideas and More Than a Feelin.

Astor Park now 3 for 3

The unbeaten Astor Park ($8.80) extended her winning streak to three with a 1 1/4-length victory over 3-5 favorite Princess Janie in the $60,000 Dearly Precious Stakes, also for 3-year-old fillies.

Trained at Penn National by Todd Beattie, Astor Park captured her first two races at Delaware Park.

She stepped up into a stakes for the first time and earned the win with a determined late run under Stewart Elliott.

Princess Janie, who most recently ran in the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park, set a brisk pace with Astor Park stalking in second.

With Castro urging her on, Princess Janie dug in turning for home but Astor Park was gaining steadily with every jump.

The time was 1:08.96 for the six furlongs on the fast track.

Bianco got third followed by You Asked. Lottacosta was the trailer following a bad stumble coming out of the gate.
