Runaway Second Down edges Ed O in Lee Berwick Futurity
Runaway Second Down was up for a head win over Ed O in the $700,293 Lee Berwick Futurity on Saturday night at Delta Downs in Vinton, La.
The race was the richest of the meet and was one of eight stakes on the Louisiana Showcase program that closed out the meet for Quarter Horses. Purses for the program totaled more than $1.4 million.
Runaway Second Down ($18.40) rallied to cover 350 yards on a fast track in 17.34 seconds. Antonio Alberto was aboard for trainer Robi Meche. Runaway Second Down is a son of Sir Runaway Dash who races for Eulalio Argote and Victor Alvarado.
Pilotoshinning, the favorite who brought a 3-for-3 record into the Lee Berwick, was bumped around out of the starting gate and was trailing the field when he fell. He was vanned off, according to a chart of the race from Equibase. Pilotoshinning's jockey, Rolando Cabrera, was unseated and appeared to avoid serious injury Saturday.
Eysa Jess Jumpn, winner of last year’s Berwick Futurity, captured Saturday night’s $308,863 Delta Downs Derby. She led throughout for a length win over Im For Real.
Guadalupe Lucio Jr. was aboard Eysa Jess Jumpn ($3.40), who covered 400 yards on a fast track in 19.52 seconds. The daughter of Heza Fast Dash races for Jose Estrada Quarter Horses and is trained by Josue Huitron.
