CYPRESS, Calif. – Runaway Ghost financed his $10,000 supplemental fee for the Grade 1 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity on Saturday with a win in the $55,675 Golden Nugget Stakes on Nov. 11 at Golden Gate Fields. The eye-catching win, by 7 1/4 lengths, was worth $30,350 for owner and breeder Joe Peacock. A start in the $300,000 Los Alamitos Futurity will provide Peacock and trainer Mike Machowsky with a better indication of where Runaway Ghost fits with several of the best juveniles in Southern California. Runaway Ghost, by Ghostzapper, won the six-furlong Golden Nugget by leading throughout. The minor stakes was his first start since a win in a maiden race at Santa Anita in June, but did not fulfill all of Machowsky’s hopes for a comeback race. :: Save on PPs, digital subscriptions, and more! Runaway Ghost has led or disputed the pace in all three of his starts, including a maiden-race win at Santa Anita at five furlongs in June. “I wish he could have sat a little more,” Machowsky said. “When he made the lead, he was gawking around.” Runaway Ghost was rested during the summer because of “tender shins,” Machowsky said. The Los Alamitos Futurity will be the colt’s first start around two turns, at 1 1/16 miles. A field of five is expected and will be led by McKinzie, a cracking winner of a maiden race at seven furlongs at Santa Anita in his debut Oct. 28, and Solomini, who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 4 at Del Mar.
