ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Runaway Again, the 2025 Prince of Wales winner, hugged a live rail until the stretch and then ran down Paramount Prince on the wire to take the Grade 3 Dominion Day on Saturday at Woodbine.
Paramount Prince, the 2023 King’s Plate victor, set a slow pace in the 1 1/8-mile event with Saugeen taking up the chase in second. Jockey Ryan Munger had the Sid Attard-trained Runaway Again tracking the leaders in third before angling him outside for the stretch.
Runaway Again ($11.20) got home on top by a neck, in a time of 1:50.63. Swift Delivery checked in third and was followed by Wyoming Bill, favored Notorious Gangster, Whiskey N Soda, and Saugeen.
It was the second stakes win on the card for Munger, who captured the Grade 3 Marine on Brachetto. Runaway Again collected $108,000 for owner Frank Stronach, who walked the gelded son of Hard Spun into the stakes winner’s circle.
“This horse is a challenging guy,” Munger said. “To get to how he was today, thank you to Sid— I really appreciate it. The trip was pretty straightforward. (Paramount Prince) loves the front so I was going to follow him around and save ground. If could get past him, I’d just about be the winner. That’s exactly how it panned out. He loves that stalking trip - that’s how he won the Prince of Wales.”
*** Shifty ($10) took her talents to the inner turf in Saturday’s Grade 3 Royal North and extended her winning streak to three races under a patient ride from Rafael Hernandez.
Shifty, who was coming off consecutive front-running allowance scores on Tapeta, tracked her speedy stablemate Without Cause in second on the backstretch in the 7 1/2-furlong race around two turns.
She hit the front early in the stretch and then held off a late bid from Kentucky shipper Fantastical to prevail by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 1:29.08.
Bessie Abott rallied belatedly for third ahead of Reagan’s Flame. Favored Ozara was a non-threatening sixth in the 11-horse field of fillies and mares.
Hernandez felt Shifty, a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, might prefer the turf over the Tapeta.
“Any surface is good,” Hernandez said. “After today, it was unbelievable. You could see the huge kick down the lane. She exploded right away. She just kept going.”
The Mark Casse-trained Shifty earned $108,000 of the $169,500 purse for D J Stable.
