Run Slewpy Run won the $50,000 Bob Barry Memorial for the third consecutive year Friday night at Remington Park when she swept to a 2 1/2-length victory over Rainbows Are Free.
It was another nose back in third to Drenched.
The Bob Barry was one of three turf stakes on the card, and all were restricted to Oklahoma-breds. The races are expected to produce starters for the $1 million Oklahoma Classics Night on Oct. 20 at Remington.
Run Slewpy Run ($3.40) closed from next to last, running into fractions of 24.08 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.37 seconds for the half-mile in the 7 1/2-furlong stakes for fillies and mares. She went on to cover the distance on firm ground in 1:32.34.
“She’s been a delight since she was born,” breeder and owner Mike Jones said in a post-race interview broadcast by Remington.
Run Slewpy Run has now won the Bob Barry at the ages of 3, 4 and 5. She is a daughter of Den’s Legacy and a half-sister to Alternative Slew, who also won a running of the Bob Barry.
Stewart Elliott rode Run Slewpy Run on Friday for trainer Jayde Gelner. She has now won 7 of 19 starts for earnings of $336,641.
Elliott had a second stakes winner on the card in the $50,000 Red Earth, in which he guided Tap the Dot to a 1 1/2-length victory over Number One Dude. It was another half-length back in third to Rowdy Rascal.
Tap the Dot ($12.20), who was making his first start since December, settled off the pace set by Rowdy Rascal, who led through an opening quarter in 24.59 seconds and a half-mile in 48.51. Tap the Dot was winding up as Number One Dude took over through six furlongs in 1:12.28 and through the stretch the winner put in a determined run to take the lead. Tap the Dot went on to over 7 1/2 furlongs in 1:31.32.
Steve Asmussen trains Tap the Dot for Asmussenequine.com and Martin Riley.
Tap the Dot is by Moro Tap. He has now won 6 of 15 starts for earnings of $237,730. Last year, he won the Oklahoma Classics Night Turf at Remington.
Dark Afternoon ($7.40) pushed past leader Twentyone N Change in the later stages for a three-quarter-length victory in the $50,000 Remington Park Turf Sprint. It was another three lengths back in third to Pomeroy Haze.
Dark Afternoon raced off fractions of 21.50 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.43 for the half-mile, with the pace set by Twentyone N Change. The eventual winner covered five furlongs on firm ground in 56.74.
“I just pointed him in the clear and he did the rest,” winning rider Jermaine Bridgmohan said in an interview broadcast by Remington.
James Rogers, who bred and races Dark Afternoon, noted in the same interview that the horse’s half-brother, Denver City, won last year’s Remington Park Turf Sprint.
Dark Afternoon is a son of Black Bear and is trained by Austin Gustafson.
