Benoit & Associates Run Away rallies in final furlong to win the Barretts Juvenile at Los Alamitos on Saturday.

CYPRESS, Calif. - Run Away closed from sixth in the final quarter-mile to win Saturday’s $100,000 Barretts Juvenile at Los Alamitos – a win that earned the three-time stakes winner a mini-vacation.

Trainer Simon Callaghan said in the winner’s circle that Run Away will have a few weeks off. The decision almost certainly ends the possibility of a start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar on Nov. 4.

“We’ll give him a bit of a freshening and determine our next target,” Callaghan said.

Run Away ($2.40) looked beaten until the final strides. Ridden by Flavien Prat, Run Away was toward the back of the field of seven, racing between horses in early stretch, and appeared to have too much to do early.

In the final furlong, Run Away closed steadily from fifth to catch 5-1 Smokem in the final strides and win by a head.

“We were a little tense,” Callaghan said of the stretch run. “He was in a tough spot between horses. It showed how big of a heart he has to run them down.”

The first-time starter Crazy Uncle Rick, a 10-1 shot, finished third, followed by Southern Warlord, Here Is Happy, Thegloryisallmine, and Time for Cioppino.

Run Away ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.17. Owned by Kaleem Shah, Run Away has won 4 of 5 starts and earned $304,400. Run Away won consecutive stakes in the Santa Anita Juvenile at 5 1/2 furlongs July 3 and the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 12.

Run Away was third, beaten 5 1/2 lengths, as the 5-2 favorite in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 4.

“I told Simon, today’s race concerns me since he was running off a big effort in the (Del Mar) Futurity,” Shah said. “Turning for home, I was quite nervous.”

Run Away is by Run Away and Hide. He was purchased for $325,000 at the Barretts March Select sale of 2-year-olds in-training. The Barretts Juvenile was restricted to horses offered at sales conducted by Barretts.
