Run Away unlikely to race again until November's Bob Hope

Simon Callaghan-trained Run Away has earned a brief vacation after winning his third sprint stakes in Saturday’s $100,000 Barretts Juvenile at Los Alamitos.
Callaghan said Sunday that Run Away is unlikely to race again until the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at seven furlongs at Del Mar on Nov. 11.
“The race seems logical,” Callaghan said. “I think he deserves a little break now. We’ll jog him for a few weeks and let him decompress.”
Owned by Kaleem Shah, Run Away closed from the back of a field of seven to win the Barretts Juvenile at 6 1/2 furlongs by a head over Smokem. Run Away had raced on or near the lead in his previous four starts.
“The way he showed he could come from off it, it wasn’t the plan, but it was nice to see,” Callaghan said. “To overcome that, it was a good performance. He’s got the class and a big heart.”
Run Away has won four of five starts, with his only loss a third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs Sept. 4.
Callaghan said he plans to start Encumbered in Saturday’s Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita. Encumbered won the Del Mar Juvenile Turf at a mile Sept. 3, his second win in three starts for owners Paul and Zillah Reddam.
Encumbered was fourth behind Run Away in the Santa Anita Juvenile at 5 1/2 furlongs July 3 in his debut and won a maiden race on turf at Del Mar on July 30. Callaghan said there is little hesitation to switch surfaces, knowing Encumbered could return to turf for the BC Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 3 if the colt is not successful in the FrontRunner.
“We feel this is the right time to do it,” Callaghan said. “We want to explore.”
There are five Grade 1 races at Santa Anita on Saturday, all with automatic berths for the winners to Breeders’ Cup races. The winner of the FrontRunner Stakes earns a berth to the BC Juvenile, while the Chandelier Stakes winner gains a spot in the BC Juvenile Fillies.
The Rodeo Drive Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf for fillies and mares leads to the BC Filly and Mare Turf, while the Awesome Again Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on dirt is a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The Zenyatta Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles is a prep with an automatic berth to the BC Distaff on Nov. 3.
Stellar Wind, the winner of consecutive Grade 1 races at Santa Anita and Del Mar in June and July, worked five furlongs in 1:01.40 Sunday at Santa Anita. She will train up to the BC Distaff.
