Run Away possible for Barretts Juvenile
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
CYPRESS, Calif. – Run Away, who finished third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 4, is a possible starter in the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile at Los Alamitos on Sept. 23.
Run Away was beaten 5 1/2 lengths as the 5-2 favorite in the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs. He fought for the lead on the turn before fading in the final furlong and finishing behind Bolt d’Oro and Zatter.
Trainer Simon Callaghan said in a text message Sunday that he was “considering” starting Run Away in the Barretts Juvenile. The race is restricted to horses who passed through a sale operated by Barretts. Run Away, who is owned by Kaleem Shah, was purchased for $325,000 at the Barretts select sale of 2-year-olds in training at Del Mar in March.
The Del Mar Futurity was Run Away’s first loss in his fourth start. He won the Santa Anita Juvenile on July 3 and the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes on Aug. 12 after beating maidens in his debut at Santa Anita on May 26.
The Barretts Juvenile is one of two six-figure stakes at the Los Angeles County Fair meeting at Los Alamitos, which runs through Sept. 24. The lone stakes this weekend is Saturday’s $100,000 Barretts Debutante for 2-year-old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs.
