Rumpole, Gold Shock win divisions of Texas Stallion Stakes

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Rumpole won his third consecutive stakes race Saturday night while making his two-turn debut in the $65,000 colts-and-geldings division of the Texas Stallion Stakes at Lone Star Park.

The race was one of two stakes on the card. Gold Shock won a photo over Celebrity’s Gift in the $65,000 fillies division of the Texas Stallion Stakes. Both races were for 3-year-olds by eligible stallions, and both were at a mile.

Rumpole ($4.20) was stretching out off back-to-back sprint-stakes wins at Sam Houston. He moved to the lead soon after the start and was able to control the pace through fractions of 25 seconds for the opening quarter, 49.64 for the half-mile, and 1:14.73 for six furlongs. In the stretch, Rumpole held off a bid from Shaded to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:39.62.

“He relaxed very good on the lead,” said winning rider Richard Eramia.

“It worked out perfect, a perfect race for us,” said trainer Bob Young. “We got lucky.”

Joe Archer bred and owns Rumpole, a son of Too Much Bling. The horse earned $39,000 for the win, his fourth victory from six career starts. He has earned $121,470.

Gold Shock became a stakes winner when she was up for a head win over pacesetter Celebrity’s Gift. Gold Shock ($12.80) had run second or third in four stakes leading up to the Texas Stallion Stakes. She covered the distance on a fast track in 1:40.75.

Bret Calhoun, who trains Gold Shock, has now won Lone Star’s fillies division of the Texas Stallion Stakes six times. He won the race a year ago with More Than Most, who like Gold Shock races for Doug Scharbauer. Gold Shock was making a rare start around two turns Saturday.

“She really showed she likes the distance,” said Scharbauer. “She definitely likes the distance.”

Ivan Arellano picked up the mount on Gold Shock after Eddie Martin Jr. had to take off the remainder of his mounts Saturday night due to illness. Gold Shock earned $39,000 for the win, her third victory from nine starts. She has earned $121,921.

Gold Shock is a daughter of My Golden Song. She is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner He’s Comin in Hot.
