Rule takes Jean Lafitte in track-record time

Mary Rampellini|Nov 07, 2009

Rule received first starting preference to next month's Grade 3, $750,000 Delta Jackpot for 2-year-olds after he won Delta Downs's prep for the race, the $175,000 Jean Lafitte, in track-record time Friday night. The race was one of six stakes on a card worth more than $900,000.

Rule ($8) established a new track record for a mile when he won the Jean Lafitte in 1:37.45. He set fractions of 22.89 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.93 for the half-mile, and 1:11.88 for six furlongs before romping home nine lengths in front of runner-up Grand Slam Andre.

It was another head back in third to Oak Motte, who finished a neck in front of fourth-place finisher Bench the Judge. Corey Lanerie rode Rule for WinStar Farm and trainer Todd Pletcher. The winner, a son of Roman Ruler, was making his fourth career start and entered the Jean Lafitte off a maiden special weight win at Belmont Park.

Truth and Justice ($2.60) earned first starting preference for the Grade 3, $500,000 Delta Princess for 2-year-old fillies on the Jackpot undercard Dec. 4 after she won her third straight stakes race in the $125,000 My Trusty Cat. She led throughout for a three-quarter-length win over Bella Diamante.

Truth and Justice covered seven furlongs, which is a two-turn race at Delta, in 1:26.29. Joe Bravo was aboard for Lori and George Hall and trainer Kelly Breen. Truth and Justice won the Sorority at Monmouth and the Debutante at Presque Isle Downs in her starts leading up to the My Trusty Cat.

* In other stakes action, the 3-year-old filly Mayhaw ($8.20) won her stakes debut by 5 1/4 lengths in the $60,000 Lookout. Jockey Carlos Gonzalez was aboard for trainer Andrew Leggio Jr.

* Leading rider Diego Saenz had a stakes double, winning the $60,000 B-Connected aboard Harlan Street ($6) for trainer Jim Hudson and the $250,000 Legacy for Louisiana-breds aboard Productive Envoy ($114.20) for trainer Tony Richey.

* Shezacrazygirl ($9.80) was a two-length winner over The Rumor's True in the $250,000 Jewel for Louisiana-bred fillies. Bravo was aboard Shezacrazygirl for trainer Greg Sacco.
