Route is okay for Affair

Ron Gierkink|May 23, 2001

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Moonlight Affair and Mysteryachievement, the first two finishers in the April 22 Lady Angela Stakes, will compete in different allowance races on Friday at Woodbine.

Moonlight Affair won the Lady Angela, a seven-furlong dash for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies, after mounting a four-wide rally from seventh over a track which favored outside closers. It was just her second start of the year and her first stakes triumph.

"Things just worked out beautiful for her," said Kevin Attard, assistant to trainer Tino Attard. "She really deserved the win. She ran against some bears last year, and she's tried hard every time we sent her out."

Moonlight Affair will stretch out to 1 1/16 miles on Friday, a distance she can handle. She was second against male Ontario-sired opposition last fall in the 1 1/16-mile Kingarvie Stakes, in which she was beaten length by Devil Valentine over a sloppy track.

Emile Ramsammy will ride Moonlight Affair, who is owned by Stronach Stable.

Completing the field for the eighth race, a $62,500 optional claimer, are Niki Nikininedoors, Classical Romance, Miss Benny, Fleur de Sel, and Devastating.

Classical Romance, Niki Nikininedoors, and Devastating are all eligible for the $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks on June 9.

Classical Romance was third in the Lady Angela, but finished up the track last time out in the seven-furlong Fury Stakes. She upset Foxy Red in winning the 1 1/16-mile South Ocean Stakes last fall and is undoubtedly at her best around two turns.

Mysteryachievement, another Oaks eligible, should be heavily favored in the fourth race, a 5 1/2-furlong preliminary allowance.

Mysteryachievement ran against the bias in the Lady Angela, in which she saved ground while stalking the pace and finished 1 1/2 lengths back of Moonlight Affair. She was third behind Treasureinmyhand in her lone subsequent outing in the Fury.

David Clark has the mount for trainer Bob Tiller.

Lining up against Mysteryachievement will be Time to Decide, Leading Role, Dreams Go Bye, Aloha Motel, and Shoot to Kill.

El Prado Essence heads the lone turf race on the card, a $62,500 optional claimer for fillies and mares.
