Round Pond sidelined by surgery

Mike Farrell|Jul 22, 2005

Round Pond, winner of the Acorn Stakes, will undergo surgery Monday to remove a chip from her left knee.

The operation will sideline her "a couple of months," said the filly's trainer, John Servis. The trainer said he had been looking forward to running her in the Alabama on Aug. 20 at Saratoga, "but you have to do what's right."

Servis described the injury as a "small chip off the inside radius of the top joint." It apparently happened last Saturday in the Delaware Oaks, where Round Pond ran second to R Lady Joy.

The defeat ended a four-race winning streak that included the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont Park and the Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
