Round five of rivalry in the Lads

Dennis Dodge|Aug 22, 2002

AUBURN, Wash. - Two-year-olds will take center stage at Emerald Downs on Saturday when Bub and Knightsbridge Road renew their rivalry in the $40,000 WTBA Lads Stakes, and Bisbee's Prospect heads a cast of eight in the $75,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes. Both races will be contested at a mile.

Bub and Knightsbridge Road will be meeting for the fifth time in the Lads. Bub holds a 3-1 edge in the series after prevailing by the narrowest of margins last time out in the 6 1/2-furlong colt and gelding division of the Northwest Stallion Stakes on Aug. 3. Knightsbridge Road won their previous meeting in the six-furlong Emerald Express Stakes by a head.

The top two will face five challengers, including the Dave Bennett-trained entry of Knight in Silver and Alicnator. All seven entrants will be stretching out to the mile distance for the first time in their careers.

Bisbee's Prospect is expected to be favored in the Barbara Shinpoch despite meeting two seasoned stakes winners in just her second start. Her debut could not have been more impressive, however, as she dispatched a field of highly-regarded maiden special weight runners by 8 1/2 lengths after speeding 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.80 on July 20.

Heading the opposition to Bisbee's Prospect are Calldara, who won the six-furlong Angie C. Stakes on July 7, and Gold Thunder, who scored in the filly division of the Northwest Stallion Stakes on July 27. Both of the stakes winners are trained by Steve Bullock, but they will not be coupled in the wagering because of separate ownership.
