MIAMI – It seemed like a good idea at the time, skipping next week’s one mile and 70-yard Foolish Pleasure Stakes with the speedy Rough’n Royal in lieu of a first-level allowance dash on Saturday’s Calder program. But when trainer David Braddy and his owner George Frazee looked at the entries and saw the likes of stakes winner Little Drama and the very fast Uno Caliente in the lineup for Saturday’s race, they opted to scratch, wait the week, and try their luck around two turns in the Foolish Pleasure. Rough’n Royal, a son of Pomeroy, was a 13 3/4-length maiden winner going seven furlongs in his second start, then returned 15 days later to finish second behind the odds-on and still-undefeated Gourmet Dinner going the same distance in the Affirmed division of the Florida Stallion Stakes. “Looking at this race [Saturday], there just seemed to be a lot of speed, or at least we thought there was, and Mr. Frazee felt it might be a better idea to wait and try him next week,” Braddy said shortly before sending out All Drama and Redfoxey Dorothy to finish first and second in Saturday’s second race. “Who knows, maybe our colt will rate, but at this point I really don’t know.” If Rough’n Royal proves himself capable of staying a distance of ground in the Foolish Pleasure, he’ll earn himself a ticket to the Stallion series finale, the $375,000 In Reality going 1 1/16 miles here on Oct. 16. “We might as well find out if he can go two turns before the In Reality,” Braddy said. “His sire, Pomeroy, was a sprinter, but the mare is by Holy Bull so maybe he’ll get some staying power from that side of the pedigree. I’m not sure if he’ll go two turns, but you really never know with any of them at this point until you try. A lot will depend on the fractions of that race.” Another break for Sweet Repent Braddy also reported that his multiple-stakes-winning mare Sweet Repent has returned to the farm after making just one start this summer. Sweet Repent capped off a five-race win streak with victories in the Grade 3 Stage Door Betty Handicap in her 3-year-old finale and Sunshine Millions Distaff to open her 2010 campaign. She was given some time off to recuperate from those efforts but finished third as the 1-5 favorite returning in the Nancy’s Glitter Handicap here on July 24, and came out of the race with a foot problem. “We sent her up to New York with the intention of running her at Saratoga this summer after the one race here, but she came up with the same foot issues that she’s struggled with all her life,” said Braddy. “Then, when she got to where she was going good enough to finally work, she popped a splint at Belmont. She’s at the farm again now where they fired the splint, and hopefully we will be able to bring her back in time to have her ready to defend her title in the Sunshine Millions.” ◗ Saturday was Secretariat Day at Calder. Fans were given a chance to win free tickets to an early screening of the film at area theaters as well as posters, movie promotional items, and Kentucky Derby videos. Secretariat, the movie, opens in theaters nationwide on Oct. 8.
