Ross looks to continue success on Canadian Millions Sales Stakes Day
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Canadian Millions Sales Stakes Day has been good to trainer John Ross, who has won at least one sales stakes in each of the past three years. Ross hopes to extend that streak Aug. 31 and has nominated a horse to four of the day’s six sales stakes races, which will be run one day before the Canadian premier yearling sale at Woodbine.
Perhaps Ross’s best hope is the 2-year-old colt Lokinforpursemonee, who won the Victoria Stakes with a 68 Beyer Speed Figure on July 17. Lokinforpursemonee is a narrow photo finish away from being undefeated in two starts, having finished second behind Pachi Cruze in the Frost King Stakes in his career debut June 26.
Ross said Lokinforpursemonee is pointing for the $200,000 Simcoe Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta.
“He’s a special little horse in our barn here, and he’s doing very well,” he said. “We’re going to pinpoint for that race there. It’s so logical for him. I wanted to space it out nicely for him, so that’s the perfect kind of race for him.”
Lokinforpursemonee returned to the work tab Aug. 7 with workmate Raglan Road, who is nominated to the $200,000 Muskoka Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. Ross also has nominated Get’erdonebud to the $125,000 Halton Stakes over one mile on turf and Classyshadesofgrey to the $125,000 Kenora Stakes over six furlongs on the Tapeta. Classyshadesofgrey captured her third consecutive victory in a six-furlong allowance sprint at Woodbine last Sunday.
• Seats to the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, National Handicapping Championship, and Hawthorne Fall Super Qualifier, along with an estimated prize pool of $50,000, will be up for grabs Aug. 27-28 in the Woodbine Weekend Handicapping Tournament, which will take place in the trackside tent.
Handicappers will be required to place $2 mythical-money win-place wagers on 10 races each day at Woodbine, Saratoga, Monmouth, and Arlington Park. Under the contest format, there are no mandatory races. For details, visit WoodbineEntertainment.com.
