Rosemere gets back to doing what she does best

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Seven-furlong expert Rosemere will cut back to that distance Friday at Woodbine in Lady Angela Stakes, a $100,000 event for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies.

Trained by Mark Casse for Chiefswood Stable, Rosemere graduated in November going seven-eighths in her fourth and final 2-year-old outing. Following a five-month absence, she finished up the course in an allowance April 6 at Tampa, but then rebounded by landing a seven-furlong Ontario-sired allowance here April 28.

Most recently, Rosemere stalked the leaders going 1 1/16 miles in an open allowance before checking in a neck back in third. The runner-up, A. A. Azula’s Arch, came back to romp in another open allowance.

Chiefswood’s general manager, Robert Landry, said that seven-eighths is ideal for Rosemere, who is named after a suburb of Montreal.

“We ran her two turns last time, to see if the [Woodbine Oaks] was a possibility,” Landry said. “She didn’t run bad, but we think it might be just a little bit past her range with those type of horses. Mark and I discussed it and felt this race was the best fit for her.”

The Lady Angela heads an eight-race card that starts later than usual, at 3 p.m. Eastern. Shortly after it ends, a Brad Paisley concert will begin near the walking ring.

“I still wouldn’t rule out the turf for her,” Landry said. “That was her first time around two turns, and she got a little tired. She was in a good spot early and just didn’t kick on and finish.”

◗ Trained by Andrew Smith, she makes her first start in 7 1/2 months. She capped her lucrative juvenile campaign by winning a pair of Ontario-sired stakes, the six-furlong Victorian Queen and the 1 1/16-mile South Ocean.

Fairy Hill, by Sligo Bay

◗ She wintered at Oaklawn after getting claimed for $25,000 here in November and recorded her first win for owner Bruno Schickedanz and trainer Norm McKnight in an Ontario-sired allowance route May 19. She’s turning back off a fading fourth in the nine-furlong Woodbine Oaks.

Without a Doubt, by Court Vision

◗ She used her speed effectively at 2, most notably in a narrow loss in the Victorian Queen. Her lack of early foot this year is concerning, but she’s been working well and could make some noise at a price.
