Rosecroft: Maryland Sire Stakes champions crowned
Four $70,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals for 3-year-olds of both sexes and gaits were held on Sunday evening at Rosecroft Raceway. Three of the races were on the pari-mutuel card, and the other one was raced as a non-wagering event before the program.
Trainer John Wagner swept the top three spots in the filly pace, with Madisonsallin (Eddie Davis Jr.) leading through panels of 26 4/5, 55 4/5, and 1:23 2/5 on her way to defeating stablemates Kelseys For Real (Jared Moyer) and Samantha's All In (Allan Davis) in a 1:53 1/5 mile.
A daughter of Rusty's All In, Madisonsallin is owned by breeder Pamela Wagner. This was Madisonsallin's seventh career win, and she has now earned $85,887. She was sent off as the favorite and paid $5.40 to win.
In the colt and gelding trot, 1-5 favorite Funnyfunnyriddle (Jim Morand) raced in the pocket at the 28 second opening quarter and the 59 3/5 half, came to the outside before the 1:29 1/5 three-quarters, took the lead away from K J Wallace (John Wagner) beyond that marker, and went on to tally by a length and three-quarters in 1:59 3/5. Kaaching Kaaching (Davis Jr.) was second, followed by Whitesville Tug (W. David Hill III.).
Les Givens trains Funnyfunnyriddle, a gelded son of Lockkeeper, for co-owner/breeder James Magno and co-owners Nanticoke Racing Inc. and Joseph Fonte. Funnyfunnyriddle has a record of 8-2-0 from 12 career appearances, and he has now pocketed $66,275. He returned $2.60 to win.
Real Made (Allan Davis) also delivered at 1-5 in the colt and gelding pace. He grabbed the lead away from KO Master (Mark Gray) approaching the 55 2/5 half, clicked off three-quarters in 1:23 4/5, and kicked away to score by 3 1/4 lengths in 1:53 2/5. Rocket Sparks (Jonathan Roberts) finished second, and KO Master held third.
The victorious Rusty's For Real gelding is trained by Brian Wright for owner/breeder Willard Hall Jr. Real Made is now a three-time winner from ten lifetime tries, and he has banked $68,590. He paid $2.60 to win.
Pride Of Windswept (Corey Callahan) took the non-wagering filly trot in 1:58 4/5. She pulled out of the pocket after the 29 second opening quarter, settled on the engine prior to the 59 2/5 half, continued to show the way to the 1:28 4/5 three-quarters and through the lane, and held sway by a length over Open Till Midnight (Russell Foster). Whipper Snipper, who was the early leader, wound up third.
The winner of the Maryland Sire Stakes finals at both Ocean Downs and Rosecroft as a 2-year-old, Pride Of Windswept, a Charlie De Vie filly, has ten wins and two seconds from 12 trips behind the gate, and she has put away $122,975.
