Rosecroft: Maryland Sire Stakes champions crowned
While the biggest race of the day in the State of Maryland was the Preakness at Pimlico, the Standardbred side in the Old Line State did get a chance to shine under the lights with four $70,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals for 3-year-olds at Rosecroft Raceway.
Berzerker (Tony Morgan) backed up his championship in the 2-year-old colt and gelding pace in 2018 by taking a 1:51 4/5 victory in the 3-year-old male pace this year, stopping the clock in 1:51 4/5 to establish a new stakes record. The Rusty's For Real colt, co-owned and bred by trainer Brandon Murray, along with Clifton and Wanda Murray, picked up his sixth win from ten career starts.
The filly pace went to 1-5 choice Anna B, who led all the way and scored in 1:53 for driver Frank Milby. Anna B, a daughter of Cam's Rocket, has a record of 4-1-1 from six tries for breeder/owner/trainer Roger Hans.
The biggest upset of the night occurred in the colt and gelding trot when 36-1 shot Remarkable De Vie got up in the lane from first-over to win by a quarter of a length in 1:53 4/5 for driver Morgan and trainer Syl King Jr. Remarkable De Vie, a gelding by Charlie De Vie, is owned by Steven Mullen. This was Remarkable De Vie's first triumph of 2019 and his third lifetime.
5-1 offering Sleek N Majestic went home with the trophy from the filly trot as she made front from first-up past three-quarters and drew off to win by four lengths in 1:54 3/5 for driver Eddie Dennis Jr. and trainer Andrew Stafford. Brian Martin bred and owns the victorious daughter of Charlie De Vie who is now a three-time winner in her life.
