Rosecroft: Familiar faces capture three of four Maryland Sire Stakes finals

Greg Reinhart|Oct 12, 2023

A trio of 2-year-olds who won Maryland Sire Stakes finals at Ocean Downs last month - Only I Exist, K J Dash and For You Girls - tallied again in their $85,000 championships on Thursday at Rosecroft Raceway.

Only I Exist (Russell Foster) faced only New Concept (Corey Braden) in the filly trot and won by 15 1/4 lengths in 1:59 4/5 after leading through panels of 29 1/5, 59 4/5 and 1:29. Only I Exist, by Yall Beneath Me, is trained by breeder/owner Richard Hans and has six wins in seven starts to go with earnings of $138,756.

K J Dash (Victor Kirby) moved from third to first past the 28 4/5 opening quarter in the colt and gelding trot, and after putting up middle-half splits of 58 3/5 and 1:28 1/5, he came home in 29 1/5 to defeat War Pony (Foster) by three-quarters of a length in 1:57 2/5. K J Dash, a Lockkeeper gelding trained by John Wagner for owners/breeders Pamela Wagner and Scott Woogen, has a record of 6-1-0 from seven outings and has banked $110,912. He returned $2.20 to win.

For You Girls (Johnathan Ahle) stalked Tony Babe (Trae Porter) from the pocket to the 27 1/5 quarter, 57 second half and 1:24 4/5 three-quarters in the colt and gelding pace, then wheeled out two-wide on the final bend. For You Girls went right by Tony Babe to take charge and drew off from there to win by 3 1/2 lengths over Firecrackergraham (Art Stafford Jr.) in a 1:53 1/5 mile. For You Girls, a gelded son of Dontloseyourdayjob, made his fifth appearance in the winner's circle for trainer Katie Callahan and owner/breeder Brian Callahan, and he has now stashed away $101,450. He paid $3.00 to win.

The lone new Maryland Sire Stakes champion was Fancy Like That, who was the defeated favorite in the filly pace at Ocean Downs. She couldn't overcome post eight that night, but from the five-hole on Thursday, she put up fractions of 27, 56 4/5 and 1:24 4/5 while on a clear lead and won by 3 3/4 lengths over Rusty's Baby Ruth (William Carter) in 1:54 2/5. Trainer Kasey Bendix also owns and bred the victorious daughter of Rusty's For Real with Virginia Marvel. Fancy Like That is a seven-time victor in 11 trips behind the gate, has put away $71,500 and returned $2.20 to win.
