Rosario caps four-win day with An Eddie Surprise in Wishing Well

ARCADIA, Calif. ‒ An Eddie Surprise gave jockey Joel Rosario his fourth win on Monday’s eight-race program in the $87,860 Wishing Well Stakes at Santa Anita.
Rosario finished the day with 30 wins at the winter-spring meeting, four more than second-place Abel Cedillo. Rosario nearly had five wins. He was beaten a nose on 5-2 favorite Meso in the eighth race.
An Eddie Surprise ($9.40) closed from fourth in a field of five to finish a half-length in front of 4-1 Miss Hot Legs. Kentan Road, the 8-5 favorite, set the pace, but could not sustain her advantage and faded to finish third.

Rosario kept An Eddie Surprise on the inside from a rail draw and moved the 5-year-old mare into contention with a three-wide move in early stretch.
“She showed a good turn of foot,” he said.
An Eddie Surprise ran 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in 1:02.40.
Apache Princess finished fourth, followed by Tonahutu in the small field.
The Wishing Well Stakes was restricted to fillies and mares who had not won a graded stakes since July 1. The Wishing Well Stakes was the first stakes win for An Eddie Surprise, who races for owners and breeders Paul and Zillah Reddam and trainer Doug O’Neill.
A California-bred by Square Eddie, An Eddie Surprise has won 5 of 26 starts and earned $341,952. She ran in $20,000 claiming races in early 2018.
