Romans mulls running Go Maggie Go in Kentucky Oaks

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Dale Romans believes Go Maggie Go has a bright future, but it remains to be seen whether that future includes making her third career start in the Kentucky Oaks against the likes of unbeaten stalwarts Songbird and Cathryn Sophia.
“It may be a bad year to have a good 3-year-old filly,” Romans said Sunday.
Still, Romans said the Oaks will very much be considered for Go Maggie Go, a 2 1/4-length winner of Saturday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks. Go Maggie Go was shipped to Kentucky on Sunday so the fact she’ll be stabled at Churchill Downs will certainly make the Oaks tempting.
“I don’t know if it’s race you’d fly cross-county for,” said Romans, who trains Go Maggie Go for Mike Tarp. “In the end it’ll still have to make sense.”
Go Maggie Go certainly deserves credit for jumping up from a debut win sprinting to a Grade 2 stakes going 1 1/16 miles. She was sitting fourth early, moved up into a modest pace, and then ran away from her competitors, including the previously undefeated graded stakes winner Off the Tracks.
“It was a great effort, but I still think there’s a lot of room for improvement,” Romans said.
Go Maggie Go earned an 88 Beyer Speed Figure for the victory.
