Rolling Green rematches top three from Joseph Grace

Street Lad wins the Joseph T. Grace Hcap at Santa Rosa 8.12.17
Shane Micheli/Vassar Photography Street Lad (center) held off late-charging rivals to win Saturday's Joseph T. Grace Handicap by a nose.

Street Lad, Camino Del Paraiso, and G. G. Ryder ran one-two-three, separated by only three-quarters of a length in the Joseph Grace a month ago at Santa Rosa. Will they be able to equal that thrilling finish in Sunday’s $50,000-added Rolling Green at Golden Gate Fields?

Like the Joseph Grace, the Rolling Green is for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Street Lad won the Grace by a nose in front-running style, but the turf course at Santa Rosa is not as kind to speed as Golden Gate’s turf. It was perhaps Street Lad’s best performance of his 10-race career, and his Beyer Speed Figure, a 91, nearly matched his career high of 94, earned two starts back in his fifth-place finish in the Wickerr at Del Mar.

“He’s been doing pretty well all year,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. “I thought he handled himself very well on the lead.”

Camino Del Paraiso’s late rally came up just short in the Joseph Grace. That race represented a return to form in a season that started with a sixth and a ninth in Grade 3 stakes at Golden Gate, the San Francisco Mile and the All American.

“That was my trainer error,” trainer O.J. Jauregui said. “I always thought he was a nice horse. The potential was always there.”

G. G. Ryder, also trained by Hollendorfer, is the proven commodity of the trio with a second in the San Francisco Mile and victory in the All American. He’s been part of the exacta in seven of his nine starts over the Golden Gate turf course.

There’s plenty of depth to the race, including a third Hollendorfer entrant, Seattle Serenade, who is making his turf debut.

Conquest Typhoon has earned nearly $500,000 on the turf and makes his first start after being claimed for $62,500 at Del Mar. Force and Goodwood Mirage just ran one-two in an optional claimer at Golden Gate, and the 3-year-old Lucky Bode ran third in the Robert Dupret Derby on the turf at Santa Rosa two starts back.
