Roll On Big Joe won't run again before Breeders' Cup Sprint

Roll On Big Joe, second in the Grade 3 Aristides Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 30 in his last appearance, is being trained toward a start in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
A five-time stakes winner since February 2025, Roll On Big Joe worked three furlongs in 37.20 seconds at Santa Anita on Wednesday.
Trainer Bob Hess, Jr., said Roll On Big Joe will need an uninterrupted preparation to be ready for the $2 million BC Sprint at six furlongs.
“That’s our ambition,” Hess said.
“We’re playing a bit of catch-up. He’s 110 percent healthy.”
Hess described Wednesday’s workout as “slow, and by design.”
A 6-year-old gelding, Roll On Big Joe has won 10 of 25 starts and earned $981,475 for the partnership of Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners, White Fence LLC and Richard Hale Jr.
Earlier this year, Roll On Big Joe won the $150,000 King Cotton Stakes at six furlongs at Oaklawn Park in February, and was second by a half-length to Mad House in the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap, a $500,000 race at six furlongs, at Oaklawn Park in April.
