Roll On Big Joe to skip Bing Crosby
:quality(75))
The five-time stakes winner Roll On Big Joe is in the midst of a summer vacation and is scheduled to return to racing this fall, trainer Bob Hess said on Wednesday. The plan means Roll On Big Joe will miss the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at six furlongs at Del Mar on July 25, the track’s leading sprint.
Roll On Big Joe finished second to Bing Crosby candidate Cornucopian in the Grade 3 Aristides Stakes at six furlongs at Churchill Downs on May 30 in his last start.
“I figured we’d give him a breather,” Hess said last month. “I want to back off and get him fresh.”
Hess said Roll On Big Joe could resume racing in stakes at Churchill Downs, Keeneland, or Santa Anita in September or early October. The goal is to reach the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland on Oct. 31 with the 6-year-old gelding.
Roll On Big Joe, who has won 10 of 25 starts and earned $981,475, races for the partnership of Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners, White Fence LLC, and Richard Hale Jr.
