Rock You scores 23-1 upset in All American Gold Cup

Steve Andersen|Sep 05, 2015

Rock You, best known for winning the 2014 Ruidoso Derby, won his first major stakes of 2015 with a 23-1 upset in Saturday’s $200,000 All American Gold Cup for older Quarter Horses at Ruidoso Downs.

Ridden by Cesar Gomez, Rock You ran 440 yards in 21.81 seconds, and finished a neck in front of 20-1 Dashin for a Prize, the winner of the Dash For Cash Derby at Lone Star Park last October. Dashin for a Prize finished a neck in front of Houdini, a 7-1 shot who won the 2014 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs.

Too Flash For You, the 8-5 favorite who won the $1.9 million All American Derby in 2014, finished sixth in a field of 10.

Rock You races for Reliance Ranches and trainer Eddie Willis. The Gold Cup was his first win since the Grade 2 Bob Moore Stakes at Remington Park in April, and ended a four-race losing streak. Gomez took the mount after regular rider Jimmy Dean Brooks missed the call with an illness.

Willis said after the race that Rock You will be shipped to Los Alamitos and trainer Jaime Gomez for an attempt at the leading races for older horses this fall.

Reliance Ranches is operated by Gary McKinney of Llano, Texas, and his son and daughter-in-law, Micah and Leslie.

Rock You, a gelding by Foose, has won 8 of 20 starts and $759,565.
