Robert Mitchell, owner, dies

Marty McGee|Aug 08, 2005

Robert Mitchell, who owned racehorses for over 40 years, died July 31 in his hometown of Tulsa, Okla., following a lengthy illness. He was 83.

Mitchell primarily owned claiming horses and generally maintained a string of 10 to 20 horses. Randy Morse, who has trained for Mitchell since 1988, still has 10 horses for the Robert Mitchell Trust, for which the horses will continue to compete.

Mitchell had one horse in the Kentucky Derby: Our Trade Winds, who was 13th in 1972. His stakes winners included Prospector's Song, My Son Bill, Well Noted, Magnify, and Catniro, all trained by Morse.

Funeral services were held Thursday in Tulsa.
