Roan Inish takes Woodbine Oaks by a head

Ron Gierkink|Jun 13, 2010

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Roan Inish punched her ticket to the $1 million Queen's Plate with a gritty victory over 24-1 shot Moment of Majesty and 2-5 favorite Embur's Song in Sunday's $501,200 .

Embur's Song went right to the front, and was rank in the early going while setting quick fractions under Garret Gomez in the nine-furlong race for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies.

Embur's Song shrugged off Resentless on the far turn, and then opened up a clear lead before being overtaken in deep stretch by Roan Inish, who came between her and a wide-closing Moment of Majesty. Roan Inish ($25.80) prevailed by a head over Moment of Majesty, in a time of 1:50.53. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Embur's Song.

Irish rider David Moran was jubilant after winning aboard Roan Inish, who banked $300,000 for owner Robert Costigan and his daughter, trainer Carolyn Costigan.

"She has a big engine, and she's very easy to ride," said Moran. "Queen's Plate, here we go. The farther we go, the better. She's as genuine as you'll get."

* Big Red Mike ($19.90) set sail on a relatively easy lead before turning back a strong bid from Mobilizer to capture the $151,200 , a prep for the July 4 Queen's Plate.

Big Red Mike set slow fractions under Eurico Da Silva in the nine-furlong route for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds. Mobilizer came inside Big Red Mike at head of the stretch to take a slim lead, but Big Red Mike battled back and won by a half-length, in a time of 1:50.41.

"He was very comfortable," said Da Silva. "He did such a nice pace, and the horse who came inside is a nice horse, but [Big Red Mike] fought so hard. I'm very proud of him."

Mobwarrior rallied wide to outrun Giant's Tomb for third. The favored Hollinger faded badly after stalking in second, and ended up trailing the eight-horse field.

Big Red Mike collected $90,000 in his first stakes score for Terra Racing Stable and trainer Nick Gonzalez.

* Somme ($26.10) closed between rivals to win her first stakes in the $118,000 . With Patrick Husband aboard, Somme ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.42 in the turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies.
