Roadster favored at 6-1 in Pool 4 of Derby future wager

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The fourth and final pool in the 2019 Kentucky Derby Future Wager was reflective indeed of the outlook for the May 4 race, with Roadster a narrow favorite over a cluster of others when the customary three-day wagering window closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern.

Roadster closed at 6-1 and was followed closely by Maximum Security (7-1), Game Winner (7-1), Tacitus (8-1), Improbable (8-1), Omaha Beach (10-1), and Vekoma (15-1). The lowest $2 exacta will-pay was Roadster over Game Winner (17-8), worth $72.80.

Nine of the individually listed horses in Pool 4 were in action in the three major preps Saturday, and the odds for most of them changed substantially in accordance with their performances – particularly with each of the three winners. Just minutes before any of the preps were run, Roadster (Santa Anita Derby) was 13-1, Tacitus (Wood Memorial) was 18-1, and Vekoma (Blue Grass) was 50-1.

Several Pool 4 horses, most notably Improbable, are slated to run Saturday in the final major Derby prep, the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

Win handle on Pool 4 was $344,418, with exactas drawing $155,988 for a combined $500,406. That total was down 8 percent from last year. Pool 4 handle of $543,010 in 2018 was up 23 percent over 2017.

Aggregate handle for the four pools (not including the Sires future wager or Kentucky Oaks futures) was $1,678,235. The record aggregate since Churchill Downs began offering parimutuel futures in 1999 is $1,893,353, set last year.

The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed as the favorite in all three previous pools. Pool 1 was held Nov. 22-25, Pool 2 from Feb. 8-10, and Pool 3 from March 8-10. The field closed at 19-1 in Pool 4.

Last year in Pool 4, the eventual Derby winner, Justify, closed as the 3-1 favorite; he returned $7.80 in Derby Day mutuels.

Only five horses were listed as individual interests in all four pools toward the 2019 Derby: Game Winner, Improbable, Instagrand, Signalman, and Vekoma.
