Rizwan wins English Channel; Red Sashay takes Honey Ryder

Rizwan became a stakes winner on Saturday, when he held off Comanche’s Storm by a neck in the $75,000 English Channel Stakes at Gulfstream Park. It was another two lengths back to Persuasive in third.
The English Channel, for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on turf, shared a program with the $75,000 Honey Ryder, won by Red Sashay ($18.20).
Rizwan ($15) settled in fourth along the rail as Twotwentyfive A set fractions of 23.08 seconds for the opening quarter and 47.18 for the half-mile. Rizwan advanced on the final turn, angled out four wide into the stretch, then kept Comanche’s Storm at bay while covering the distance on firm ground in 1:40.46.
Jose Caraballo was aboard Rizwan for owner and breeder Vegso Racing Stable and trainer Phil Gleaves. Rizwan has won 5 of 9 starts and $120,725. Rizwan is a son of Silver Tree.
In the Honey Ryder, for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf, Red Sashay closed from next to last for a neck win over Miss Margaret. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to Lismore in third.
Jonathan Gonzales was aboard for Goodwood Racing V and trainer Jane Cibelli. Red Sashay covered the distance in 1:37.16. Red Sashay is a daughter of Big Brown and was bred in Kentucky by Andrew Cohen and Gary Tolchin.
