River Downs: Unbeaten filly Stamp Queen tries turf, two turns in Tomboy

John McDulin|May 10, 2012

Stamp Queen will try to remain unbeaten Saturday at River Downs when she faces seven other Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies in the $50,000 Tomboy Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf.

It will be the first time on the grass for the impressive Stamp Queen, as well as her first time going two turns.

Stamp Queen, trained by Doug Cowans, has yet to be challenged in her three-race career. In her maiden debut Feb. 21, she won by more than 21 lengths in handy fashion. In her next out March 14, she won by 10 1/2 lengths ridden out. In her most recent victory, she won the Royal North on April 7 by 6 1/2 lengths. All three victories were going six furlongs at Beulah Park. Jockey Rafael Hernandez will ship in to ride. He and Cowans have been combined to win at a 50 percent clip the past two years.

None of the eight entrants has gone two turns or run on the turf, but Aggressive Elegance looks to need more distance and is bred for the turf. She closed fast in her debut at Mountaineer on April 20, missing a victory by a head. Azael Deleon will ride.

Fluffy Ontheinside is another Cowans trainee who may improve on the turf. After winning her first three races, Fluffy Ontheinside finished third to Stamp Queen in the Royal North. Perry Ouzts will ride.

Turbulent, Magnetism, Judy’s Reflection, Kivi Khan, and Wild N Bratty are also entered.
