ARCADIA, Calif. – A spring of career landmarks continued for Umberto Rispoli Sunday at Santa Anita, where the jockey notched a six-win day on the final program of the track’s spring meeting. Last month, Rispoli won his first American classic with Journalism in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. Sunday was Rispoli’s most successful single day of riding since he relocated from Hong Kong in December 2019. Rispoli won the first race on Cuban Confusion ($4.20), the fifth on Word Play ($2.10), the sixth aboard Pavlovian ($5.40), the eighth with Hero Or Zero ($5.60), the 10th on Pony Express ($6.80), and the 11th on Bad Uncle Barry ($21.50). All but Pony Express and Bad Uncle Barry were favored. “I thought I had some horses with decent chances,” he said after the last race. “Everything had to set up in the right spot. It was an amazing day.” :: Santa Anita Clocker Reports are available every race day. Access now. Sunday was the 25th time that a jockey in California has won at least six races on a program this century. Rispoli was the first to reach the milestone since Frankie Dettori on April 6, 2024, at Santa Anita. Rispoli, 36, had a quartet of four-win days at Del Mar in 2020, but he had never won more than three on a program at Santa Anita. The Santa Anita track record of seven wins in a day was set by Laffit Pincay Jr. in March 1987. “It seems things are coming together,” Rispoli said, reflecting further on his Sunday wins. “It’s a product of choosing the right horses and riding for the right people that support us. It’s a big achievement for me.” Since 2000, three riders have achieved seven-win days in California. Martin Pedroza reached the milestone twice in 2008 at Fairplex Park. Victor Espinoza, in 2006, and Drayden Van Dyke, in 2018, had seven-win days at Del Mar. Pedroza won six races on four other occasions at Fairplex Park from 2009 to 2013. Russell Baze reached the six-win milestone five times at Bay Meadows, Golden Gate Fields, and Cal-Expo in Sacramento from 2007 to 2015. Flavien Prat won six races on four occasions from 2020 to 2022. Jason Lumpkins had two six-win days at Bay Meadows in 2001 and 2002, while Rafael Bejarano had six-win days at Santa Anita in 2006 and Del Mar in 2014. Two riders have reached the six-win milestone once – Corey Nakatani at Santa Anita in 2000 and Joel Rosario at Hollywood Park in 2009. Nakatani is the father of Matt Nakatani, Rispoli’s agent. Rispoli finished the Santa Anita spring meeting with 26 wins, eight behind Antonio Fresu, who won his first riding title in California since his arrival from Dubai in 2023. Rispoli would have had more winners were it not for extensive travel connected to the Triple Crown. Rispoli was aboard Journalism for a second in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3 and a second in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on June 7. Rispoli said he plans to ride at Royal Ascot in Britain on Friday and Saturday, but otherwise will have a light riding schedule until the Del Mar summer meeting begins on July 18. The jockey plans some vacation time with his family in coming weeks. “I think I deserve it after the five long weeks of the Triple Crown,” he said. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
