Rising filly a worthy choice

Ron Gierkink|Jul 17, 2007

ETOBICOKE Ontario - Sweetdetermination has improved by leaps and bounds since launching her campaign, and she deserves top billing in Thursday's Woodbine headliner, a first-level allowance for fillies and mares.

Sweetdetermination, a 3-year-old trained by Danny O'Callaghan, never challenged in her season opener. She turned her fortunes around dramatically, however, when she recorded a 33-1 upset in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special May 30.

Most recently, in a seven-

furlong allowance June 27, Sweet-determination mounted an eye-catching wide rally from off slow fractions to finish a head behind the stakes-placed winner, My List. She received a Beyer Speed Figure of 83.

Richard Dos Ramos, the only rider Sweetdetermination has ever had, will again be aboard the filly, a daughter of Alphabet Soup.

Other contenders in the feature include Hello Moneypenny, Bella Rush, Tale of the Fox, True Pic, and Box Office Launch.

Hello Moneypenny captured her only start last year at 2 over $32,000 maidens. She had a four-wide stalking trip when she was third behind My List and Sweetdetermination on June 27.

Hello Moneypenny, trained by Jim Smith, drew post 1 Thursday, which is the same post she had when she was a fading fifth in her next-to-last outing.

Bella Rush placed in several $40,000 conditioned events before winning her latest, bucking a speed bias with a strong wide rally. She is moving up off a rare claim by trainer Barb Minshall,

Tale of the Fox graduated second time out with the addition of Lasix, beating Prophetically, who came back to take a maiden special by 5o1/2 lengths. She has worked three times since that June 8 maiden special, including a six-furlong drill on the Polytrack in 1:13.

True Pic earned a Beyer Figure of 83 when she won a $20,000 conditioned claimer convincingly after an extended layoff May 5. She followed it up with a third-place finish in a seven-furlong allowance, and was a wide fourth on the grass when she returned from a freshening earlier this month.

Box Office Launch broke through in her third appearance of the meeting June 27, winning an Ontario-sired allowance with a 75 Beyer. She was previously second to the 3-year-old You Will Love Me, who was coming off a victory in the restricted Lady Angela Stakes.
