Right to Vote takes Rasmussen at Prairie Meadows
ALTOONA, Iowa - Right to Vote stalked Evan's Calling's dawdling pace and pounced leaving the far turn to grind out a 1 3/4-length victory in Monday's $75,000 Jim Rasmussen Memorial Stakes at Prairie Meadows.
Evan's Calling and jockey Alex Birzer marched through fractions of 24.84, 49.21 and 1:12.62 in the 1 1/16-mile race before Right to Vote made it a sprint to the finish. Under Israel Ocampo, Right to Vote finished in 1:43.75 and paid $9.60. Favored Leadem in Ken finished a neck behind Evan's Calling in the seven-horse field.
Trained by Ron Moquett from his Churchill Downs base and owned by B J D Thoroughbreds LLC, Right to Vote earned $45,000. He is considered a possible entrant in the Grade 3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap on June 28.
Right to Vote won Oaklawn Park's $100,000 Essex Handicap in February.
Also on Monday, Hung the Moon rated kindly along the inside for jockey David Mello, and surged to the front early in the stretch on her way to a 1 1/4-length win in Monday's $50,000 Wild Rose, a 1 1/16-mile test for fillies and mares. She covered the distance in 1:44.58 and paid $12.60.
Despite bearing out slightly when roused, Hung the Moon was clear of the 4-5 favorite Hitechnoweenie while registering her first stakes win. Hitechnoweenie held second, two lengths in front of Glorys Last Chance, who was third.
Hung the Moon is trained by Donnie K. Von Hemel and stabled here. A 4-year-old homebred Malibu Moon filly, she earned $30,000 for Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stable.
