Right There, Swipe supplemented to juvenile stakes

DEL MAR, Calif. – For $10,000, the stakes winners Right There and Swipe will each start in a $300,000, Grade 1 race for 2-year-olds at Del Mar this weekend.
That is the supplemental entry fee facing Matt Bryan, who owns both runners through his Big Chief Racing. Right There, bound for the Del Mar Debutante for fillies on Saturday, and Swipe, who will run Monday in the Del Mar Futurity, are trained by Keith Desormeaux, who said Wednesday the stout fees are worth the investment.
Right There won the Landaluce Stakes at Santa Anita in June but was only fourth of six in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes here Aug. 12. Desormeaux insists that the last race is not an indication of Right There’s ability.
“I know she’s better than her last race,” Desormeaux said. “We were expecting more. Her works leading up to the race were on the slow side. She was dull. Her subsequent works have been quicker.”
Right There’s rivals will include the three fillies who were in front of her in the 6 1/2-furlong Sorrento Stakes – Pretty N Cool, Gomo, and One True Kiss. Pretty N Cool, trained by Bob Baffert, will be a strong favorite in the Debutante.
Swipe was a gritty winner of the Summer Juvenile Championship at six furlongs July 12 at Los Alamitos, beating Mrazek, who won the Graduation Stakes for California-breds on Aug. 5. Swipe was second to Nyquist in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs Aug. 8. Nyquist will be part of the Del Mar Futurity field, but Desormeaux said the distance suits his runner.
“I think the added sprint distance will help,” he said.
Nyquist will be favored in the Del Mar Futurity, with Swipe likely to be the second or third choice behind the impressive maiden-race winner Blameitonthelaw.
