Riders survive Bay Meadows spill

Chuck Dybdal|Sep 22, 2003

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Jockey Omar Figueroa was taken to Peninsula Hospital for X-rays on his left shoulder and wrist, while jockey Joe Castro apparently was uninjured after a horrific spill in Sunday's seventh race at Bay Meadows.

Figueroa's mount Always the Winner suffered a compound fracture of the left front leg at the quarter pole of a 1 1/16-mile race for $16,000 claimers.

Castro's mount, Brodrick, could not avoid the fallen horse then seemed to prop, catapulting Castro over his head in a somersault. Castro appeared to land on his left arm but reported no injuries after the spill.

Not Accountable, ridden by Chad Schvaneveldt, was able to leap over Figueroa to prevent more serious injuries to the rider.

Always the Winner had to be euthanized. Brodrick suffered no apparent injuries.
