Rider hurt in River Downs fall

John McDulin|Jul 30, 2007

Jockey Jorge Collazo Sr. was expected to be released from University Hospital in Cincinnati on Monday following treatment for two broken vertebrae suffered in a spill during Saturday's seventh race at River Downs. Collazo's mount, Affair in the Air, clipped heels in tight quarters and fell, throwing Collazo entering the turn of the five-furlong race.

Collazo, 50, who was taken to the hospital's trauma unit by ambulance, will be in a neck brace for the next eight weeks and then be reevaluated. He said he is in pain in his arms and shoulders from swelling of his spinal cord. He will be out for a maximum of three to four months, but is confident he will return to race-riding.

"I'll be back," said Collazo. "I have been hurt worse than this."
