Rider gets 10,000 wins

Alan Shuback|Jan 10, 2008

Jorge Ricardo became the first jockey in history to ride 10,000 winners on Wednesday when he rode five horses to victory at San Isidro Racecourse near Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ricardo set the mark in the 11th race on the card, the Premio Le Exima, a 5 1/2-furlong dirt allowance in which he rode Membresia to a half-length victory.

A 46-year-old Brazilian, Ricardo has been engaged in a duel with San Francisco-based Russell Baze for international victory leadership since Baze surpassed Laffit Pincay's old mark of 9,530 in December 2006. Ricardo currently holds a 27-win lead over Baze at 10,000-9,973.
