Rideouts Patton wins Anderson Fowler

Ryan Goldberg|Jul 22, 2001

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Rideouts Patton is a bona fide turf sprinter.

Rideouts Patton carved out rapid fractions of 20.98, 43.38, and crossed the wire in 55.56 before a crowd of 15,703 to win the $50,000 Anderson Fowler for three-year-olds at five furlongs on Sunday. Tommy Turner rode Rideouts Patton, who improved to 3 for 4 on the turf. His only loss came by a head in a turf sprint allowance here July 12.

"The trainer did all the work," Turner said, "I just held on. He's got natural speed and I just let him do what he wanted to out there."

Rideouts Patton broke sharply from the gate, with Rock and Sparkling Number right with him. Turning for home, he broke free slightly off the rail and cruised to a 3 1/4-length win. Rock, after dropping back before the final turn, came again on the rail to nose out Sparkling Number, a filly versus colts, for second. Rideouts Patton, the 4-5 favorite, paid $3.80, and topped a $9.80 exacta.

* Sea of Tranquility ($5.80) showed why he was named Jersey-bred of the year about a month ago, defeating nine other state-breds in the $50,000 Bernie Dowd Handicap on Sunday. Sea of Tranquility, a 5-year-old trained by Richard Paulus, suffered a bad start, but came flying late in the lane to cover six furlongs in 1:09.83. H.M.S. Jackson, who took over the lead down the stretch, finished a length back in second. Just Beforemidnite was third.

"This was really a blow out," said Paulus, who trains the winner for Triple M Farm. "He's best around two turns and that's where we'll keep him."

Sea of Tranquility, who was ridden by Jose Ferrer, will make his next start in the Grade 3 Salvator Mile, Aug. 5.
