Rideau Carleton: Mass Hysteria, Climb The Pole strike in OSS Gold Series

Greg Reinhart|Jul 16, 2023

Mass Hysteria won the front-end and Climb The Pole inherited a victory via placing in a pair of Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series battles for 3-year-old trotting fillies on Sunday night at Rideau Carleton Raceway.

Piloted by Trevor Henry in the first C$100,400 division, Mass Hysteria shot to the lead from the pole position and put up the quarter in 27 2/5, the half in 57 3/5 and the three-quarters in 1:26 1/5. Race favorite Muscling Vegas (Paul MacDonell) came out first-over from third past the half-mile marker, but Mass Hysteria turned her away and then drew off on her rivals in the lane, tallying by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:54 3/5. HP Extra Ice (James MacDonald) closed well from third-over to get second and Believe U Me (Louis-Philippe Roy) got third.

Trainer Kyle Bossence also co-owns Mass Hysteria, a daughter of Muscle Mass bred by Kenneth Wiese and Kristina Anderson, with partners Daniel Culp and William Pendleton. She has three wins, two seconds and two thirds from 11 career starts, has now pocketed C$244,408 and paid $11.20 to win as a 9-2 offering.

All eyes were on O'Brien Award winner Righteous Resolve (MacDonald) in the other C$101,300 split, and after clearing Climb The Pole (Jody Jamieson) passing the 27 3/5 opening quarter, she continued to show the way through middle-half panels of 56 3/5 and 1:25 2/5 before she closed in 28 4/5 to win by a length and a quarter in 1:54 1/5. However, following an inquiry, it was determined that Righteous Resolve had gone into the passing lane during the stretch drive and taken the chance to race in that space away from Climb The Pole, a violation of the rules. As a result, Climb The Pole would be placed first and Righteous Resolve back to second, with Baroness Hill (Doug McNair) back in third.
