postedBy Steve AndersenINGLEWOOD, Calif. – Richard’s Kid, the winner of the 2009 Pacific Classic, will make his first start since a seventh-place finish in the Dubai World Cup in March in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on Saturday.The winner of the Grade 2 San Antonio Handicap at Santa Anita in February in his only other start this year, Richard’s Kid adds depth to a race led by California male handicap division leader Rail Trip.Richard’s Kid finished seventh in the $10 million Dubai World Cup, beaten 2 1/2 lengths by winner Gloria de Campeao after chasing a slow pace for the first half of the 1 1/4-mile race.“He never did get to run in Dubai,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “He had a horrible trip. He ran the last 100 yards.”Owned by Zabeel Racing of Dubai, Richard’s Kid will make his first start at Hollywood Park in the Gold Cup, the meeting’s championship race for older males. Baffert said that Richard’s Kid will be ridden by Martin Garcia, who has taken a more prominent role in the Baffert stable this year. Garcia rode Lookin At Lucky to a win in the Preakness Stakes for Baffert in May.The Gold Cup is expected to have a field of 10 or 11. Aside from the Rail Trip and Richard’s Kid, the candidates include Awesome Gem, Brushburn, Cigar Man, Compari, Sangaree, Slew’s Tiznow, Tap It Light, Tres Borrachos, and possibly Victory Pete.“Rail Trip loves the track,” Baffert said. “He’ll be tough to beat.”Rail Trip has won both his starts this year – the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap and Californian Stakes. He is the defending champion in the Gold Cup.Dotsy Jean game in victoryDotsy Jean had to give it her all to win Friday’s $72,250 Culver City Stakes.“She gave every ounce of strength in her body,” trainer Marty Jones said on Saturday. “She’s tired but she looks all right.”Ridden by Joel Rosario, Dotsy Jean ($6.80) led throughout the six-furlong turf race for fillies and mares and won by a desperate nose over Minute Limit in 1:08.74. Those two were a half-length ahead of Porto Marmay in the field of five.“She wouldn’t let that filly get by,” Jones said.Dotsy Jean has won 10 of 41 starts and $318,133. She ran in claiming races ranging in value from $6,250 to $32,000 until she was claimed by her current owners for $16,000 at Golden Gate Fields in January 2009. She has since won 7 of 15 starts, though the Culver City was her first stakes win. Earlier this year, Dotsy Jean was third in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita.Jones is loaded with female turf sprinters this year. The stable’s division is led by Unzip Me, the winner of three sprint stakes earlier this year before finishing third against males in the Robert Kerlan Handicap on June 27.Both Dotsy Jean and Unzip Me will be pointed for the $75,000 Daisycutter Handicap over five furlongs on turf at Del Mar on Aug. 13, Jones said.Quinonez sanctioned for whip useJockey Alonso Quinonez has been fined $500 for violating a whip rule in a winning ride aboard the $16,000 claimer Partywithlarryz in the sixth race on May 1.Quinonez was cited by Hollywood Park stewards with a second offense of “causing welts or breaks in skin.” The ruling was released on Thursday.Through Friday, Quinonez had 15 wins at the meeting, ranking 12th in the jockey standings.
