ALTOONA, Iowa – The two-day Iowa Festival of Racing culminates Saturday evening with the track’s annual trio of Grade 3 stakes: the $200,000 Iowa Oaks, the $250,000 Iowa Derby, and the $300,000 Cornhusker Handicap. The Oaks, with nine 3-year-old fillies scheduled to go 1 1/16 miles, is led by 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Ria Antonia, Sugar Shock, and Thank You Marylou. Ria Antonia, who was moved from Bob Baffert’s Santa Anita stable to the Churchill Downs-based outfit of Tom Amoss in early May, looks to get her campaign back on track after finishing last in the Preakness on May 17. Sugar Shock, the locally based winner of Oaklawn’s Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes in April, showed an affinity for the Altoona oval when turning back fellow Oaks rival Dream Spinner by 1 1/4 lengths May 31 in the Panthers Stakes. Thank You Marylou finished third April 5 in Keeneland’s Grade 1 Ashland Stakes and ran fifth, beaten 12 1/2 lengths by the stellar Untapable, in the Kentucky Oaks on May 2. Designer Legs, who won Saratoga’s Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes last August via disqualification, also was a stakes winner here last year and will aim to turn her frustrating sophomore season around. Awesome Jill, Senior Prom, Size, and Tiz Windy have proved their mettle against allowance company in recent weeks and will try a class hike in this spot. Vicar’s in Trouble, a convincing winner March 29 of the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, heads a group of nine colts and geldings in the 1 1/16-mile Iowa Derby. In his last race, Vicar’s in Trouble had a rough trip from the rail post when 19th in the May 3 Kentucky Derby. Embellishing Bob, who was promoted to first after crossing the line a nose behind Bayern in the Grade 3 Derby Trial in April, lines up for his first try around two turns after flattening out behind Bayern’s brazen display of speed in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens on Belmont Stakes Day. Jessica’s Star, who closed strongly to take the May 31 Prairie Mile here by a neck over fellow Derby Trial foe Tairneach, returns from Churchill Downs. Charge Now, a half-brother to 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver; I Got It All, the top Illinois-bred 3-year-old; Six Spot, an improving Steve Asmussen trainee; and the locally based duo of Smack Smack and Russellin also will line up. The Cornhusker Handicap, which attracted six 4-year-olds and two 5-year-olds, is headlined by the multiple Grade 1-placed Golden Ticket, the Grade 1-placed Carve, and the speedy Ground Transport. Golden Ticket, who cruised to an eight-length win here last July in the Prairie Meadows Handicap, ended last year with an impressive rally for second place to Goldencents in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Carve, who finished third behind Will Take Charge and Revolutionary in the April 12 Oaklawn Handicap, dusted a solid group of Churchill allowance foes by 3 3/4 lengths June 14. Ground Transport led every step of the way in $100,000 races at Laurel and Belmont this spring, and the nine-furlong distance of the Cornhusker is well within his scope. Golden Ticket’s stablemate, Bellarmine, Coin Broker, Eriugena, Right to Vote, and Lent, a half-brother to 2012 Cornhusker and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Fort Larned, also have entered and cannot be dismissed at first glance.
