Rhetorical's speed carries him in Coolmore Turf Mile, earns BC Mile berth

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A turf miler with early speed and a late kick is a very dangerous horse. Rhetorical has both and put them to good use winning the Coolmore Turf Mile for the second year in a row on Saturday at Keeneland.
Granted, Rhetorical did not exactly have to blaze a path to the lead. Irad Ortiz broke him sharply from the gate, dawdled through an opening quarter-mile in 24.73 and, with his only pace rival, Zulu Kingdom, kept in a stalking position by jockey Jose Ortiz, Rhetorical got his opening half in a breezy 49.76.
Then he started to run faster. Rhetorical ran his third quarter, going around the far turn, in 24.51, and was a blur through the homestretch, going a seventh furlong in 10.95 and his last in 11.33 for a closing quarter in 22.28, winning the Grade 1, $1.02 million Turf Mile by 2 1/4 lengths.
Lake Forest, who shipped from England, has no positional pace and despite being hurt by the race shape and getting caught in tight quarters in upper stretch, he closed with a flourish between Title Role and Brilliant Berti to finish second. Title Role, a 3-year-old stepping up to face older horses while cutting back in distance, ran a bang-up race to get third by a head over Brilliant Berti. Second favorite Zulu Kingdom wanted to do more than he was permitted down the backstretch while under stout restraint, was just about a half-length behind Rhetorical at the three-sixteenths pole, but could not finish with the top three and checked in fourth.
Rhetorical got his mile on firm turf in 1:36.35 and paid $5.72 as the favorite. The Turf Mile is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series race, and he earned a fees-paid automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Mile, a race in which he finished a competitive fourth last year.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the horse,” said Will Walden, who trains Rhetorical for Gary Barber, Cheyenne Stable, and Wachtel Stable. Barber also co-owns Classic Q, who won the Grade 1 First Lady on Saturday. “Look, he’s an incredibly talented individual.”
A New York-bred, Rhetorical is by Not This Time out of Sheet Humor, by Distorted Humor. The 5-year-old gelding didn’t start out with Walden and posted works through several months of his 2-year-old season without making the races. Walden took over his training after Rhetorical had a spell at WinStar Farm, and Rhetorical finally debuted in July of his 3-year-old year. He raced twice, went on another break until May 2025, and emerged that summer as a talented middle-distance horse. In his graded-stakes debut, he won the Turf Mile here last year by three-quarters of a length.
Rhetorical has had an up-and-down 2026 campaign. He aced the $1 million Turf Classic on Derby Day at Churchill, but soon after developed a fungal infection in his hoof that troubled him through much of the summer, and then pitched a fit in the paddock before the Fourstardave on Aug. 8 at Saratoga.
Rhetorical minded his manners Saturday and, as in the Turf Classic, showed an affinity for racing on a clear lead.
“Even with a strong pace, when he’s on the lead, he seems like he can go fast and at the same time he’s relaxed, and he saves a lot of energy,” Ortiz said. “I like him when he makes the lead. He has an explosive kick, too.”
Lake Forest finished even faster than Rhetorical, getting his final quarter in 22.15
“The winner’s a good horse, he got an easy lead, and kicked off it well, and it was always going to be hard to chase him down late,” jockey Cieren Fallon said. “We got squeezed a little bit, but we wouldn’t have beat the winner today off the pace we went. I think in the Breeders’ Cup there’s going to be more runners, and there’s going to a stronger gallop, and I think you’ll see a different horse.”
Maybe it will be Rhetorical on the lead again in the BC Mile. Maybe he’ll have to go a lot faster. Maybe that won’t stop him this year.
