Not every cloud has a silver lining, but this week at Del Mar stormy weather produced at least one small benefit – the Desi Arnaz Stakes will not be a one-horse race after all. Del Mar is scheduled to resume racing Sunday after the Saturday card was canceled because of inclement weather that upended both the stakes schedule and turf program. The seven-furlong Desi Arnaz for 2-year-old fillies was postponed from Saturday to Sunday, and redrawn. Stakes winner Himika remains heavily favored, but stakes-placed Revera benefited from the redraw. Initially stuck on the rail, Revera is drawn outside Himika and poised to upset. Six fillies are entered in the Desi Arnaz, which would have been the Sunday co-feature. But the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes for 2-year-olds of either gender attracted only two entrants. It was rescheduled for Nov. 21. “With everything going on weather related, that may have impacted the [Bob Hope] entries,” Del Mar racing secretary David Jerkens said. “We knew it would be a struggle, like every 2-year-old race, but we’re going to try again.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Del Mar runs more turf races than dirt races during its fall meet, but with no racing Saturday and an all-dirt program Sunday turf racing is on hold. “There’s going to be a plethora of extras, because I’m backed up on turf for two days,” Jerkens noted. Del Mar might consider adding a racing day to compensate for the Saturday cancellation, but next week looks dicey also. “The long-term forecast doesn’t really look great for [Nov. 20-21], so if you’re thinking of adding a day, you don’t want to go through [another cancellation],” Jerkens said. “So, we’re going to be in a holding pattern.” While the autumn schedule is in flux, at least the Desi Arnaz redraw turned it into a better race. The Desi Arnaz goes as race 8 and runs through Himika and Revera. The remaining entrants are Stuffy Mist, Bourbon and Ginger, Heaven’s Bolt, and Cosmic Heat. Bob Baffert trains Himika, who defeated a rail-compromised Revera by more than four lengths last month in the Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita. John Sadler, who trains Revera, looks forward to a rematch. Revera “drew the one [post] the other day and got beat by Himika,” Sadler acknowledged. “I’d like to have a better post this time, and another crack at her.” Revera was stuck on the rail when the Desi Arnaz was drawn for Saturday. When it was redrawn, Revera drew post 4, outside Kimika. Revera also prefers Del Mar to Santa Anita, and her sharp maiden win two starts back gives her a license to upset under jockey Antonio Fresu. Himika, of course, will be tough to beat. She won her first two starts, including the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar, ran below par her next two starts, then returned to form by winning the Anoakia by more than four lengths. Juan Hernandez rides Himika. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
