There was no racing at Santa Anita on Wednesday, but there was still plenty of action for Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza. Through the morning, Espinoza conducted his own workout - a three-mile run, a session in the gym, and a final piece of exercise on a mechanical horse. At 52, and 32 years after his first win, Espinoza remains a fixture in Southern California, evidenced by his two wins last Friday and Sunday on the opening weekend of the Santa Anita autumn meeting. “I’m feeling great,” he said late Wednesday morning. “It’s nice to get an opening weekend with a couple of wins. It helps with the motivation.” :: Bet Santa Anita with confidence! Get DRF All Access Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and more. Last Friday, Espinoza rode the heavily favored Pure Madness to an easy win in a three-runner allowance race for sprinters. In Sunday’s final race, Espinoza rode 6-1 Sneaker to a front-running win in an allowance race for 3-year-old fillies on turf. Espinoza rides less frequently than earlier in his career. During the first three days of the Santa Anita meeting, Espinoza had three mounts. This year, Espinoza has won nine races from 90 mounts, nearly matching his 13 wins from 128 mounts last year. The statistics are quite a change from when he won a career-best 259 races in 2006. The current focus is searching for a top horse this fall, in time for the Breeders’ Cup races at Del Mar on Nov. 1-2. So far, the goal has been elusive. “I’m still looking and shopping around,” he said. “I’ll stand by for the right one. “I’m trying to find one horse, for Triple Crowns and right now for the Breeders’ Cup. You never know.” Espinoza is well-versed on such runners. He has won the Kentucky Derby three times, most recently on 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah, and has won four Breeders’ Cup races, including the 2015 Classic on American Pharoah and the 2021 Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Ce Ce. Until such a prominent runner comes along, there are everyday races to ride. This Friday at Santa Anita, the track’s next day of racing, Espinoza is booked on two mounts on the nine-race program. Retirement is not in Espinoza’s plans. “I’m still focusing on my riding,” he said. “It helps when I start winning and I can get the right horse. “It’s never been easy. We can’t predict the future. It’s always been tough. I’ve been around long enough to know the game. “It can change overnight, just with the right horse.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
