Retama: El Joven, Senorita top stakes schedule
Retama Park near San Antonio, Texas, will again feature six stakes during its Thoroughbred meet, which opens Aug. 21. The 26-date season will run through Oct. 17.
The El Joven and La Senorita, a pair of one-mile turf races for 2-year-olds, highlight the schedule. The longtime fixtures worth $75,000 each will share a program Oct. 3. The first round of nominations for the El Joven and La Senorita, which is for fillies, close Friday, July 10.
Retama’s stakes schedule will open with a program of four stakes Sept. 12. The Texas Hall of Fame Stakes and the Fiesta Mile will share a card with a pair of divisions of the Texas Stallion Stakes.
On the same day, Retama will induct six individuals into the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame during a gala. The announced class of 2015 is Lukin Gilliland Sr., Stanley Beard, Sammy Jackson, Ken Armbrister, Dan and Jolene Urschel, and No Le Hace. The distinguished-service award will go to Ben Hudson.
James Leatherman, racing secretary at Retama, is now accepting stall applications and said he will visit Lone Star on Wednesday and Thursday.
