Reporting for Duty closes to win

Reporting for Duty closed from next to last for a 4 3/4-length win over entrymate Red Rock Creek in the $100,000 Maxxam Gold Cup at Sam Houston Race Park. It was another two lengths back in third to Goosey Moose.

Reporting for Duty ($6.40) settled in fifth in the 1 1/8-mile race for older horses, as Honest Man, the 4-5 favorite, and Goosey Moose dueled through the six furlongs. Reporting for Duty overtook the leaders in the stretch and barreled home, covering the distance over a track rated good in 1:52.33.

Luis Quinonez rode the winner for trainer Steve Asmussen and owners Bob and Cathy Zollars.

* Buy the Barrel was an 8 1/2-length winner over Bold Angel in the $50,000 Sam Houston Distaff. She covered the 1 1/16 miles over a track rated good in 1:45.46. Gabriel Saez rode the winner for trainer Larry Jones.
