OKLAHOMA CITY – Wine Police held off a determined rail bid from Alsvid for a three-quarter-length win in the $150,000 Remington Park Sprint Cup. The race was one of six stakes on a special Sunday afternoon card led by the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby.

Wine Police ($6.80) was quick to move into tracking position in the Sprint Cup and pushed leader Beggarthyneighbor through an opening quarter-mile in 22.29 seconds. The eventual winner overtook that one through a half-mile in 45.25 and went on to cover the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.67.

“He’s a really fast horse,” said Henry Dominguez, who trains Wine Police for J. Kirk and Judy Robison.

Enrique Gomez rode the winner, who invaded from Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M.

Wine Police began his year at Del Mar, winning a $62,500 optional claimer Aug. 1 in his first start since December 2011. He entered Sunday's race off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien on Aug. 25.

Wine Police is a 5-year-old gelding by Speightstown and was bred in Kentucky by John Mulholland and Martha Jane Mulholland. He has won 5 of 11 starts and $337,037.

Alsvid was the 3-5 favorite after winning two straight races, including a 16-length allowance score in July for which he earned a 109 Beyer Speed Figure. He had one rival beat early in the Sprint Cup, split horses in the stretch, and drove up the rail to fall just short.

Okie Nova wins Ladies on the Lawn

Okie Nova ($20.80) got her second career win in the $50,000 Ladies on the Lawn on Sunday when she overtook pacesetter and stakes winner In the Band near the wire in the 7 1/2-furlong turf race for fillies and mares bred in Oklahoma. Okie Nova won by 2 3/4 lengths and covered the distance on turf upgraded to firm in 1:30.68.

Cliff Berry rode the winner for the Richter Family Trust and B.J. Richter. Okie Nova is a 4-year-old daughter of the Kingmambo stallion Cavvy and is trained by Kenneth Nolen.
