Remington Park track report

Mary Rampellini|Aug 17, 2005

Tom Durant makes an impact on the owner standings wherever his stable settles, and he is back at Remington Park this meet for the first time in several years. Durant won the title at the Oklahoma City track in 1999 with 20 wins from 96 starters, and comes into the current meet fresh off winning his fourth ownership title at Lone Star Park near Dallas.

Jack Bruner, who trains for Durant, said the owner's 25-horse stable at Remington is a young barn. Among its promising horses are the 2-year-old Sing Baby Sing, who is a full brother to Value Plus, runner-up in the 2004 running of the Grade 1 Florida Derby; and Miesque's Affair, a 3-year-old half-sister to No Place Like It, the 2004 winner of the $200,000 Pin Oak Stud USA at Lone Star for Durant and Bruner.

Another up-and-comer is Gruff, who is 4 and figures to be a player in the region's stakes races following his impressive comeback race at Lone Star on July 15. Gruff rallied to win his comeback start, a tough six-furlong optional claiming allowance, in 1:09.73. The race was his first since he ran fifth in the Iowa Derby in July 2004.

"Ideally, he'll be two turns," said Bruner.

Bruner is racing at Remington on a regular basis for the first time, but has shipped into the track for stakes before, and was fourth in the 2003 Oklahoma Derby with Kool Humor.

Bruner and Durant will be active in the seventh race Friday night with Seeking Gold. In his last start, the horse was fourth in an entry-level allowance at Lone Star that has since become a key race. Kevin Cogburn has the mount Friday.

* My Misty Princess, a stakes winner, returns from a brief freshening in the featured eighth on Friday, an optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares at a mile on turf that should produce starters for the $40,000 Ricks Memorial on Sept. 5.
