Remington: 'Dixie' beats Mumtaz

Mary Rampellini|Sep 03, 2001

In her first start back from a five-month layoff, Darlin Dixie held off favorite Mumtaz by a half-length to pull a mild upset in the $50,000 Ricks Memorial Handicap at Remington Park in Oklahoma City on Sunday. It was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Runaway Magic.

Darlin Dixie ($15.60) broke sharply in the mile turf race for fillies and mares, and controlled the pace throughout, covering the distance over firm turf in 1:35.84. "When she got out front, she relaxed pretty good," said Don Pettinger, who was aboard the winner for owner Don McNeill and trainer Donnie Von Hemel.

Darlin Dixie earned $30,000 for the win, which improved her career totals to four wins from 13 starts and earnings of $114,600.
